The other day I watched my daughter playing in my bedroom. My wife was on the computer working away busily, when Isabella ran up beside her. Isabella reached up and grasped for the mouse, which Tia obligingly gave to her. It’s a cordless mouse, which Isabella looked at and grasped in her hands. She then began poking at it with a finger and then threw it on the floor.

It’s amazing to me how much God resonates within our lives and within our culture. Not that everything we do as humans is divinely inspired or guided, but rather that the mark of God can be seen in so very much around us. This has been the case as Rob Reavis and I have been considering the theme for this year’s junior high camp.

Do you ever stop and wonder why we do the things we do? (I do, and it usually gets me into trouble!) For example, have you ever touched the wall behind a “wet paint” sign to see if it is really wet? Do you let the phone ring at least twice before answering it, even if you are right there? Ever tried vacuuming the cat? How about leaving sunglasses on top of the fridge so a midnight raid won't blind you by opening it? Personally tested your dog’s bark collar? Do you come unglued because the toilet paper is hanging the “wrong” way? (And yes, there IS a right way! Ha! Ha! )

As I round the corner into the statistical second half of my life, I have noticed a profound thing. The “pursuit of happiness” of my earlier years has delightfully given way to “acceptance with joy”.

While you are reading this I am somewhere between Kolkata, India and Kigali, Rwanda – if everything is on schedule. We, at Hayden Lake Friends Church, have been privileged to “invest” in global outreach to several cultures over the past few years.

Our Mission Committee, along with Evangelical Friends Mission (EFM), has encouraged me, Maurice, to schedule a trip to India and Africa in a few weeks. The first stop will be Kolkata to visit D.K. and Choity Sarkar. A specific agenda is to see the Emmanuel Hostel and the progress that is being made after one year of its operation. A couple of modifications are being discussed that could affect the structure and use of the facility. One is DK’s desire to have a school room on site, with the plan to have a teacher and curriculum that is more along the line of English-based Western education.

Dear Friends, “Silence is golden!” Who said it? I’m not sure but this week I enjoyed its truth. Last week, I finished up the new garage roof on House of Grace working from dawn until dusk in the 100+ degree weather. I tried to keep up with my duties at church at the same time. This culminated with the church picnic at the camp on Sunday. I was ready for a break. So Sunday evening I packed my bags and books and a laptop computer, got on my bike and headed for the cabin. When I got there, I threw my “stuff” on the couch and went out on the deck and sank into a deck chair and just sat...and listened. It wasn’t silent but the sounds were like music to my ears. There are big fish in the lake and they were jumping right around the dock. There were a couple of loons singing a loony duet. A couple of osprey were fishing and dive-bombed a fish right in front of the dock. Then I heard the clump, clump, clump of big feet and an oversized bull moose ca ...

Let’s play the word association game. I’ll say a word and you quickly say the first word that comes to your mind. Ready? DOG… (Cat?) HOT… (Cold?) FUR... (Coat?) WORSHIP… (Evangelism?) WAIT…WHAT???
